halosband's Journals on Buzznet

Halos' singer and co-writer Dan Lyman fell in love with musicianship, as a lot of kids do, in the basement of his parents' houses late at night, staying under the radar, listening to music he wasn't allowed to. No doubt, a lot of people were singing along to 94.7 FM's "best love songs from the 80's and 90's" in Amherst, MA when they were 11 years old, but Dan was recording every song on a tape-deck, dissecting and examining each.

Dan's culminating love for rock-fueled by freezing days of stacking wood in his back yard, listening to Everclear and 311- spurred him to break out over the country with a couple of friends on self-booked national tours. He rocketed out of the basement, his parent's house, and the state in one burst.

Halos began in 2004, at the last leg of Dan's own nomadic touring and the months of national criss-crossing and living in his tour van. Something more sedentary (in the structural sense, not the geographic one) was brewing. Friends John Hoge and Josh Huber were brought in to complete the keyboardist/bassist/guitarist ensemble (Josh, John and Dan, respectively).

This required a return to the basement (John's this time)-where Halos' music began to mature into what it is now: a blend of modern indie rock effusions, dotted with elements of the band's influencers-the late greats and the new-producing vivid, lyrical rock, salted with an occasional twang of country and the pop riffs of the 80's and 90's, the stuff you remember hearing on the radio when you were a kid.
